The battle map was centred on Gheluvelt. The British line stretched from Zonnebeke in the north, through Reutel, Gheluvelt, and Zandvoorde before turning west towards the Messines-Wyschaete ridge. Jack Sheldon noted in his book ‘The Germany Army at Ypres 1914’ that the area was criss-crossed with hedge rows and copses. The long straight road running middle left to bottom right is the Menin Road.
