During Turn 4, the German machine gun company fired on the British defenders deployed in the open near Hébuterne. Two British infantry companies were put out of action. Fearing major casualties if IR 49 resumed the advance (now that no further British companies were spotted), the commander of IR 49 successfully made an order change to Defend whilst manoeuvring his rearmost battalion along his left flank.
IR 140 reached the sugar beet factory.
The lead New Zealand battalion moved towards Auchonvillers to make contact with British 2nd Division. The rear two battalions and the Auckland Machine Gun Company continued in defilade towards the intersection by the factory.
