At the end of Turn 10, IR 14 had lost heavily. The defenders of the sugar beet factory also took heavy casualties. Whilst one of the Whippet sections became suppressed, the Whippet machine guns tore into the German companies and caused several to break.
The Whippets were supported by the Auckland Machine Gun Company, within which my grandfather served. He talked about firing on Germans holding a cemetery; there was a cemetery near the sugar beet factory. The Vickers machine guns fired into the area. Pa mentioned how the bullets ricocheted off the head stones, reducing protection for troops trying to hide behind them.
