One of my grandfather’s momentos was a battle map of the area. As a 12-year old in the Boy Scouts, I understood the topography but had no idea of the military context. When I started to put this scenario together for a Great War Spearhead supplement on the Somme, I reviewed an online version of the map. The place names were not familiar but the topography was. Once the Auckland Machine Gun Company history became available, the events resonated with what Pa had mentioned. This made the scenario even more special.
