German trench lines

This view shows the various lines of German trenches. The forward line is smothered with the creeping barrage. There is a middle line and a rear line, behind which lay the Lys River. The river was essentially uncrossable apart from the bridges. It formed a major barrier, which limited the depth of the defense. The Germans chose to create additional trench systems on the forward slope, particularly below Wytschaete. The network of switch trenches and communication trenches can be seen in this view.
