The German cavalry had started to deploy into defensive positions in front of the burning village. On their left, the infantry regiment is sustaining heavy accurate fire from the Russian field guns in this sector. Caught moving in the open, many of the German infantry companies took a terrible beating. It was too much for some. A hole is beginning to appear. The Russian commander chose not to redeploy his cavalry once contact had been made. They remain in line of squadrons along the main road, with the lead squadrons coming under fire.
