From the British and Dominion perspective, fighting had raged throughout 7 August at Lone Pine (top right). The New Zealand Brigade had forced its way up Rhododendron Ridge but was unable to get as far as Chunuk Bair. The Wellington Battalion, just below the word‘Chunuk Bair’ in the photo above, had replaced the Auckland Battalion at the head of the brigade.

4th Australian Brigade was holdingDamakjelik Spur (bottom left), short of its objective - the ridge leading up to Hill 971. The Indian Brigade held the ground between the New Zealand and 4th Australian Brigades. Reinforcements had come forward during the night, grouped behind the New Zealand and Indian Brigades.
